Project entitled ‘Gender and schooling in Kazakhstan: A mixed-methods study’.

Project runs for two years (2020-2021) and focuses on the relationship between schooling and gender. The Research Assistant will be based in GSE, Nazarbayev University but will require traveling to different regions of Kazakhstan to collect survey data from schools.

Candidates must have completed a Master’s degree in education or a related field (such as sociology, politics, psychology, anthropology) and written their thesis on an educational or social science topic.

This full-time (40 hours) fixed-term post is available from January 2020, initially for one year, subject to a satisfactory probation period of two months. Through mutual negotiation, the position can be extended until December 2021. The candidate will receive on the job training on developing and administering surveys, entering data into SPSS and NVivo and quantitative and qualitative data analysis.


Compulsory qualifications, skills and abilities:

  • A good Master’s degree in Education or other cognate disciplines;
  • Good proficiency in written/spoken Kazakh, Russian and English;
  • The ability to travel independently to collect survey data from schools located in different regions of Kazakhstan is a compulsory condition;
  • Good analytical and time management skills;
  • The ability to enter survey data into SPSS.


Desirable skills and experiences

  • The ability to construct paper and online surveys;
  • The ability to undertake statistical analysis;
  • Experience or interest in conducting research on gender and education.


Main Responsibilities

  • Independently administering surveys in schools in different regions of Kazakhstan;
  • Developing paper and online surveys;
  • Data entry, cleaning and basic analysis;
  • Literature review and synthesis on gender and education in Central Asia;
  • Developing contracts for service providers such as translation, transcription and data entry.
