Recruiting for Research Personnel for Project: Co-creating culturally relevant Social Science research ethics in Central Asia: Mediating local and global influences. [Short title: Central
Asian Research Ethics (CARE) Project
The CARE research team is currently recruiting for the following positions for this project, running
from January 2021 until December 2023. We are looking for applicants for the following positions:

  • 1 post-doctoral fellow,
  • 1 PhD student,
  • 3 Research Assistants with a Master’s Degree,
  • 1 Research Assistants currently enrolled in a Master’s,
  • 1 Administrator

relevant Social Science research ethics in Central Asia: Mediating local and global influences. [Short title: Central Asian Research Ethics (CARE) Project. The project is led by Professors Elaine Sharplin and Lynne Parmenter from the Graduate School of Education at Nazarbayev University, Neil Collins from the School of Science and Humanities at Nazarbayev University and Aigul Zhakupova from Kokshetau State University. 
During this assistantship, you may develop your project management skills in educational research, organize research events, and engage in producing research outputs. You will develop knowledge about research ethics in three Central Asian countries. Finally, friendly and professional researchers will encourage and guide you so you can become a part of an emerging research community. Focusing on the Social Sciences in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, the research aims to:

  • explore understandings of current Social Science research ethics practices in CA;
  • investigate the fit of international research ethics practices with the cultural context of CA;
  • collaboratively create understandings of culturally and contextually relevant research ethics principles and practices to facilitate the production of local and global Social Science research in
    CA;
  • develop national and institutional research ethics policy infrastructure to support increased knowledge production in the region;
  • co-create, implement and evaluate capacity-building strategies and systems to increase the generation of impactful and relevant ethical Social Science research in CA; and,
  • build Central Asian research networks for sustainable collaborative inquiry.

Job Descriptions
Post-Doctoral Fellow (full time)
Basic qualifications/requirements:

  • Doctoral degree related to a field of Education, Humanities or Social Sciences.
  • Candidates should demonstrate a strong academic record and sufficient proficiency in written and spoken English and Russian. Some proficiency in Kazakh would be helpful. Proficiency in Kyrgyz and or Uzbek would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Possess analytical and time management skills, ability to work independently and as a team member, and excellent communication skills.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience or interest in conducting quantitative and/or qualitative research.
  • At least one academic publication.
  • Prior experience as a research assistant or teaching assistant.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Liaise closely with the project leadership team;
  • assist research team in planning and carrying out qualitative and quantitative research;
  • conduct literature searches and retrieve articles and reports, summarise existing research, and contribute to literature reviews and other desk research;
  • assist in designing and translating research documents into Kazakh and/or Russian (or Kyrgyz and Uzbek);
  • assist with the collection and management of data;
  • conduct qualitative coding and thematic analysis of study data and/or quantitative analysis of data using relevant computer software;
  • manage and organise multiple datasets;
  • assist with logistics and translation for workshops and interviews;
  • contribute to and/or lead on the writing of draft reports, articles and presentations;
  • coordinate and manage the work of other research assistants;
  • teach into relevant university courses;
  • involvement in university service activities, such as school-based committees; and
  • other tasks as requested by the project leadership team.

Additional information:

  • This post is a service contract initially for 2 years with ability to renew the contract for a further 1 year. The position is full time.
  • The position is anticipated to commence on 11th January 2021. For semester 1 2021, it is likely that most work will be conducted from home. However, should the current Covid 19 context change, employees would be expected to work from the Nazarbayev University campus in Nur-Sultan.

1 PhD student (10 hours per week)

  • Enrolled in a doctoral degree related to a field of Education, Humanities or Social Sciences.
  • Candidates should demonstrate a strong academic record and sufficient proficiency in written and spoken English and Russian. Some proficiency in Kazakh would be helpful. Proficiency in Kyrgyz and or Uzbek would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Possess analytical and time management skills, ability to work independently and as a team member, and excellent communication skills.

Preferred experience:

  • Experience or interest in conducting quantitative and/or qualitative research.
  • Prior experience as a research assistant or teaching assistant.

3 Research Assistants

  • transcribe and translate data and conduct qualitative coding and thematic analysis of study data;
  • contribute to draft reports, articles and presentations; and,
  • carrying out duties as determined by the project leadership team.

1 Project Administrator
Basic qualifications/requirements:

  • Completed a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field of Education, Humanities Social Sciences or Business.
  • Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English and Russian. Some proficiency in Kazakh would be helpful. Proficiency in Kyrgyz and or Uzbek would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Possess excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to work independently and as a team member, and excellent communication skills.

Preferred experience:

  • Prior experience as a project manager, research assistant or administrator.

Primary duties and responsibilities

  • Maintain project calendar and timelines;
  • manage financial requirements of the project;
  • manage reporting requirements;
  • meetings – meeting agendas and minutes of meetings – follow up action from meetings;
  • assist with planning of travel for business trips;
  • maintain project folders and documents;
  • RA contracts and contract reporting requirements; and,
  • carrying out duties as determined by the project leadership team.
