Gulmira is a postdoctoral scholar in the Graduate School of Education, Nazarbayev University. She taught English for specific purposes and worked as an administrative staff member in higher education institutes in Kazakhstan prior to completing the Talap scholarship funded PhD in Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge. In her thesis, she explored the facilitation of teacher leadership in schools in Kazakhstan. Gulmira’s current research interests include the development of teacher leadership in mainstream schools in Kazakhstan. In collaboration with several Kazakhstan and the UK-based organisations, Gulmira is involved in implementing and monitoring the “Teacher Leadership in Kazakhstan” initiative, which currently includes 16 school principals, 32 vice-principals and 180 teachers in 4 regions of Kazakhstan. Gulmira is also an investigator on a project (led by Dr Ali Ait Si Mhamed and Dr Liz Winter) exploring the introduction of per-capita funding in schools in Kazakhstan. Gulmira has published in both international and local journals including the International Journal of Teacher Leadership and Pedagogical dialogue.
