NUGSE Professor Matthew Courtney and his team have developed a web app for quantitative analysis

Assistant Professor NUGSE Matthew Courtney and his team have developed a web app for quantitative analysis. More about the app you may find in our QA below and on the introductory video.  Please read the interview and watch the video to learn more about Automated Psychometrics.
Who is the target audience for the app?
Teachers, school assessment experts, and researchers interested in using data to improve assessment and inform learning.
- How did you come to the idea of app development?
During my PhD I became passionate about statistics, and as a post-doc I fell in love with programming. The app simply brings these two passions together.
- What is something specific about this app among other similar apps like this one?
This is the first app of its kind that enables users to extensively pre-specify their methodology of choice. The app writes the methodology section, results section, and even a narrative of the results in a report for users. The app actually extends the capacity of previous cloud-based software in 10 ways.
- What is your expectation on implementation of this app?
It will continue to grow and develop as our team grows and develops it. We have updates ready to launch soon and have many plans. I will monitor traffic on the site.
- Who is in your team?
My other co-authors are from around the world and all of our skills work together well.
Ms Laila Issayava (MSc Ed, NU) is a leading expert in mathematical statistics at NIS's Center for Pedagogical Measurements. I invited her into the team because of her background in math and programming. She manages multiple projects on student assessment in Kazakhstan and made important contributions to the app and associated paper.
- Something you would like to add that we haven't covered in our questions?
The app represents an advancement at the nexus between quantitative methods, automation, and cloud-computing. Consequently, the industry is at an inflection point where researchers using quantitative methods are either software users or software developers. I choose to be a developer and to share the potential of this new world with my students by introducing them to basics of quantitative methods through programming.
