Connecting Research, Policy, and Practice: National Education Priorities in Kazakhstan

Last week, we had the pleasure of bringing national education stakeholders together with our PhD students at Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education for a workshop on National Priorities for Research, Policy and Practice in Education in Kazakhstan.

The workshop was organized particularly for our Year 1 PhD students to help them better understand current national priorities in education and consider how their emerging doctoral research can engage with pressing policy and practice needs in Kazakhstan.

We were privileged to welcome distinguished speakers representing key national education institutions:

• Dr. Assel Kambatyrova, TALDAU – National Center for Education Research and Evaluation

• Aida Meyrkulova, Deputy Chair of the Board, National Center for Professional Development “Orleu”

• Pernegul Taubay, Deputy Director, Y. Altynsarin National Academy of Education

• Naurzhan Didarbekova, Deputy Chair, Committee of Higher and Postgraduate Education, Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Our speakers shared perspectives on current developments and priorities across different levels of Kazakhstan’s education system and discussed areas where further research and evidence are particularly needed.

For our doctoral students, this was an important opportunity to think about the relationship between research, policy, and practice from the very beginning of their PhD journey.

We are very grateful to all our speakers for generously sharing their time, expertise, and perspectives, and for engaging in such a thoughtful discussion with our PhD community.

Bringing researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and doctoral students into conversation is an important part of strengthening the connection between educational research and the evolving needs of Kazakhstan’s education system.
