NUGSE took part in a project aimed at reducing the proportion of NEET youth in Kazakhstan →

On March 28, 2023, Nazarbayev University hosted a conference dedicated to the results of the project “The evaluation of challenges of youth in Kazakhstan and piloting innovative solutions”.

During the conference, experts shared the findings of the study about the NEET youth problem (stands for “Not in education, employment or training” and youth who are not studying, working or improving their skills at the moment), youth preferences in employment and gaps in employment. For the first time in Kazakhstani practice, the methods of experimental economics were applied in the project.

The project “The evaluation of challenges of youth in Kazakhstan and piloting innovative solutions” was implemented over a two-year period by a team of researchers with a grant from the US National Academy of Sciences and USAID. The project aimed to develop recommendations for reducing the number of NEET youth and developing evidence-based policies for these youth.

The conference presented innovative research approaches for Kazakhstan based on experimental economics - laboratory and field experiments. Also during the event, the project team announced the results of the experiment on testing the proposed policy before its implementation and information intervention in relation to NEET youth.

Compared to most countries, Kazakhstan has shown a significant reduction in youth NEET over the past 20 years - from 18.6% in 2001 to 7.1% in 2020, i.e. a decrease of 2.6 times (Bureau of National Statistics of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms of the
