NUGSE Experts Lead Discussions on AI and Education at NIS 2025

On October 30–31, the Graduate School of Education (NUGSE) proudly took part in the XIV International NIS Conference, hosted at Nazarbayev University under the theme “School Education in the Digital Age: Key Trends and Challenges.”

This year’s conference brought together education leaders, researchers, and innovators from Kazakhstan and around the world to explore how artificial intelligence and digital technologies are reshaping teaching, learning, and school leadership.

Professor Daniel Hernández-Torrano, Vice Dean for Research at GSE, presented “Practical AI for Teachers: Scalable Tools for Differentiated Instruction.” He shared insights from a pilot project with his master’s students, demonstrating how teachers can create custom GPTs to make differentiated instruction practical and scalable - allowing educators to focus on creativity, engagement, and meaningful learning.

Professor Syed Abdul Manan delivered a talk titled “Leveraging the Transformative Potential of Digital Technologies and AI Tools for Effective Language and Content Learning.” He argued that generative AI technologies like ChatGPT are redefining language education, literacies, and authorship, serving as catalysts for reflection on the collaborative nature of writing. He also emphasized the need for critical and ethical engagement with AI technologies and systemic adaptation in education and policy to harness their transformative potential responsibly.

Several NUGSE alumni and current students took part in different sessions of the conference, contributing to insightful discussions on leadership, digital transformation, and inclusive education. Among them was Nurlan Imangaliyev, NUGSE alumnus and Head of the Research and Development Department at the Bilim-Innovation International Educational Foundation, who spoke on “The Paradox of Automation: How AI Helps and Harms Teachers at the Same Time.”

The discussions throughout the conference underscored NUGSE’s continued commitment to advancing educational research and innovation in Kazakhstan - empowering educators to navigate the digital age with purpose, ethics, and creativity.
