Master students of Graduate School of Education participated in the 8th International Conference on Building Cultural Bridges in Bishkek
On April 28-29, Dalmira Kulmaganbetova and Darina Kussainova, Master students of Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education, participated in the 8th International Conference on Building Cultural Bridges (ICBCB) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The purpose of the conference was to discuss the ideas and experiences of university students and academia involved in various scientific fields. Its peculiarity was the focus on both similarities and diversity of cultural values.
In the frame of the session “Education System in Multilingual Communities”, Dalmira and Darina presented the empirical research aimed at the investigating Kazakh parents’ language ideology. The study was conducted among the academia of Nazarbayev University. The findings allowed to define the major factors forming parents’ language ideology which involved their geographical, cultural, and academic backgrounds, national language policy, and the domains of the language use. As a result, they were reflected on parents’ language repertoire and children’s language acquisition and learning. The study underpinned the role of parental involvement in the education process and highlighted parents’ awareness of the importance of family language ideology for developing multilingualism in their children.
The presentation received the valuable feedback and comments for further implications. Their study was mentioned during the closing ceremony because it raised a lot of questions among the audience and brought the dialogue among participants. Dalmira and Darina appreciated the opportunity to take part in the ICBCB as long as they gained the experience of presenting, discussing, and ensuring the importance of the research.
