Workshop on strengthening intercultural competence among the school's wide range of international and local teachers

On September 22, International School of Astana (Nazarbayev Intellectual School) invited NUGSE instructor Philip Montgomery to conduct a workshop on strengthening intercultural competence among the school's wide range of international and local teachers. 30 participants worked for a 90-minute session to discuss the various ways that misunderstanding and conflict can arise when people from different cultures interact.

Governing for Autonomy: Framing the Challenges and Noting the Progress

On September 19, 2016 research staff of Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education, alongside Professor Matthew Hartley and Professor Peter Eckel from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, conducted an international conference entitled “Governing for Autonomy: Framing the Challenges and Noting the Progress”. There is good reason why this particular topic was chosen as the main theme of the Conference. Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School (USA) have been conducting a research project entitled “Advancing Models of Best Practice in Academic Governance and Management in Higher Education Institutions in Kazakhstan" that focuses on a thorough study and analysis of the current governance reforms in HEIs in the Republic of Kazakhstan and will follow with developing recommendations in this area.

Training for school leaders of Nazarbayev University was held in The Graduate School of Education on September 9, 2016, this training was within the framework of project "Development of the strategic directions of education reform in the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2015-2020" in the field of "Study on sustainable development of Kazakhstan universities in transition period". The Professor Makoelle’s book presents the practice of inclusive education of children with disabilities. Program of professional development of HEI’s staff within the SPIID-2; knowledge of cooperation, innovational educational projects Regular course of professional development for Kazakhstani HEI’s staff is carried out at the Graduate School of Education. This time training are for 100 university executives at the senior and middle management level involved in the management, academic and research process within the framework of the State program of industrial-innovative development of Kazakhstan for 2015-2019 - SPIID-2. This program, which is a part of the industrial policy of Kazakhstan, is focused on the development of manufacturing industries - metallurgy, chemistry, petro chemistry, machine building, production of building materials, the food industry with a concentration of efforts and resources on a limited number of sectors of regional specialization using the cluster approach, and effective regulation of the industry. The most important condition for the realization of the state program is to prepare higher education institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan the required number of personnel with a high level of training and skills in demand by employers in key industries SPIID-2.

GSE Instructor Philip Montgomery conducted a seminar at the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Monday, June 27. In a 90-minute session with twenty professors and education specialists, Mr. Montgomery discussed strategies to improve assessment in higher education. Using examples from Academic Writing, the main focus was on the use of detailed rubric, and how students who are required to assess their own and their peer's work using the rubric perform better on assessments.

The Nazarbayev University held a five day course for medical university leaders, organized by the order of the Ministry of Healthcare and Social Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan. May 26, 2016 at Nazarbayev Universityholds the jubilee V Eurasian Higher Education Leaders Forum (EHELF), which is an important event in the sphere of Kazakhstan’s education. 2016 Forum Topic - "Higher education and modernization of the economy: innovative and entrepreneurial universities". The event program includes a plenary session with the participation of international and local experts, representatives of universities and the business community, as well as Nazarbayev University Sharing Experience sessions. The forum was attended by over 300 participants from Kazakhstan, CIS and foreign countries - Great Britain, Israel, China, the United States, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Russia.

The "NUGSE Student Shadowing Event" Open House Day was held at the Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education (NUGSE) on May 4, 2016. This was an exciting recruitment event which actively involved potential applicants and the NUGSE community, including students, alumni, faculty and staff. A workshop on organising scientific research projects and preparing research publications took place on 22 April. It targeted academic staff members, young scientists, master's and PhD students and staff members of Nazarbayev University library. The workshop was organised by professors at the Graduate School of Education and staff members of NU library, they also acted as speakers. As outlined by Duishon Shamatov, one of the event organisers, the workshop aimed to involve master's and PhD students into scientific research work, assist young researchers to learn about research projects of their colleagues from other university divisions and probably encourage new joint projects.

British Council and GSE: workshops for Kazakhstani researchers

Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education has won funding from the British Council through the Newton – Al-Farabi Partnership Programme to establish a Professional Development and Engagement Centre for Astana and the Akmola Region. The Centre will design and deliver courses to develop skills of Kazakhstan-based researchers, including training in ethical conduct of research, as well as strategies for international research collaboration and publication. The Centre will also provide a platform for dissemination of research findings and coordinate the development and operation of a network of university-based institutional research centers.

"Leadership in education" workshop was conducted in Karaganda with the participation of two GSE NU graduates, Kamshat Alan and Almira Yembergenova. It was the third workshop conducted by vice principals of Nazarbayev intellectual school in Karaganda organized for principals of 30 mainstream schools of Karaganda region. These schools are pilot ones to introduce the NIS experience.It was the first experience of Kamshat, English teacher and Almira, language coordinator of Karaganda NIS, taking part in organization of such event.

Faculty members of Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education conducted a seminar in September 18 for the staff of the Civil Service and Anti-corruption Agency. The seminar was attended by about 100 representatives of the agency from 13 regions of Kazakhstan as well, cities Astana and Almaty. Despite the fact that the majority of audience, about 80 people attended the seminar virtually, through the Internet, an assistant professor Duishon Shamatov and Ali Ait Si Mhamed managed to create a truly interactive experience for everybody.

A group of young researchers from Nazarbayev University - Dr. Aliya Kuzhabekova and Ainur Almukhambetova from the Graduate School of Education and Dr. Saltanat Janenova from the Graduate School of Public Policy - have been awarded a research grant by the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs in the amount of 100,000 NOK (NUPI) (http://www.nupi.no). 82 university teams from Central Asia and Caucasus region took part in this competition and only 10 teams have been finally selected including two teams from Kazakhstan: NU and KIMEP.

Research team of Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education participated in the 39th annual Association for the Study of Higher Education Conference (ASHE) that was held on 20-22 November, 2014 in Washington, US. Kazakhstan’s researchers took part in the project of DAAD and the British Council on internationalisation of higher education as national experts

In 2014, the DAAD and the British Council conducted an analysis of national study abroad scholarship programmes in Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Kazakhstan. Collaborating closely with national experts of these countries, the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD and the British Council prepared a final report on ''The rationale for sponsoring students to undertake international study: an assessment of national student mobility scholarship programmes''.
